About MDE

Founded in 1996, Minority Development & Empowerment, Inc. has strived to become the leading organization in promoting a legacy of empowerment for Caribbean and other minority communities. MDE provides diverse programs and services to assist minority populations of Broward and Palm Beach counties into becoming self-sufficient members of the community.

 

Social Services

 

Family Reunification Services

Reunifies Haitian, Caribbean, Latino and other families who have had their children removed from the home due to abuse or neglect and who have subsequently made steps toward family reunification.

Targeted Outreach for Pregnant Women Act (TOPWA)

Offers free services for Broward County pregnant women including assistance with medical insurance, prenatal care, HIV testing and nutrition classes. The program culminates with a baby shower party providing essential gifts for the newborns.

Florida KidCare

Screens and assists eligible families to apply for health insurance for their children under the age of 19.
Serves as a trainer for sites to assist their families with the application process.

ACCESS

Assists clients four days a week in preparing applications for Food Stamps and other social services in English, Spanish and Creole.

Income Tax Services

Free tax and financial services to low-income Broward County residents between the months of January and April.
This program is sanctioned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Haitian Emergency Action Response Team (HEART)

Assists the survivors of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti who have relocated to Broward County by alleviating stressors through counseling and supported case management activities to achieve: lack of employable skills, family reunification, communication barriers, and educational training with the ultimate goal of achieving self-sufficiency.

Health Services

 

Mobile Clinic Initiative

Offers free health screening and on-going treatment for uninsured and immigrant populations with chronic illnesses in collaboration with Holy Cross Hospital.

Closing the Gap on Diabetes

Provides free diabetes screenings, linkages to resources and healthy-lifestyle classes to prevent diabetes in the Haitian community. The program is a diabetes disease self-management education initiative for Haitians in Broward.

Rapid HIV Testing and HIV Counseling

Reaches into communities in Broward and Palm Beach to offer free and confidential HIV testing with results in 20 minutes along with education and referrals.

Outreach (Palm Beach County)

Identifies PLWHAs who are not connected to care and facilitates access and retention in care.

Anti-Retroviral Treatment Access Study (ARTAS)

Promotes HIV treatment adherence, facilitates education on healthy living, and linkages to relevant services in Broward County.

Medical Case Management for PLWHAs

Assists and follows up with PLWHAs with their medical and other case management needs with HIV system. Peers also take part in guiding clients by providing a positive role model. Program is available in both Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Housing Assistance for People Living With HIV/AIDS (HOPWA)

Assists and advocates for eligible PLWHAs for housing assistance in Broward County

Mental Health Counseling/Psychiatric Services

Provides individual and group therapy for minority PLWHAs in Broward County.

Offers home and community-based services to promote, maintain and optimize health status of PLWHAs in Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Education Services

 

Employment and Self-Sufficiency Program

Offers job readiness assistance to individuals from other countries to ensure a successful transition in Broward County.

Substance Abuse Prevention Program

Provides guidance to the Haitian, Caribbean and minority parents of adolescents to ensure that their children develop the necessary skills to be drug, alcohol and tobacco-free in Broward County.

Youth Force & Youth Bridge

Provides students with academic, life skills training, cultural and community service activities at Broward school campuses after school and during the summer improving their academic performance and chance of success in high school and beyond.

Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP)

Provides an evidence-based early literacy-school readiness program that encourages verbal interaction, reading and educational play between parents and their pre-school children who have had limited exposure to educational activities in Palm Beach County.
